Michael Hastings’ advice to young journalists. I’ve both sought out and been given plenty of advice, but this has always been some of the best.

Rest in peace.

Great video about shessomickey about the challenges and rewards of advertisements, and how advertising revenue (from, say, giraffe sex videos) can finance the creation of other things (like Thoughts from Places videos).

I believe in capitalism, to be clear. Without capitalism, we’d never have tumblr or YouTube, because both had huge start-up and maintenance costs before they could become self-sustaining. (Tumblr still isn’t self-sustaining; YouTube supposedly is, although google doesn’t break it down publicly).

I don’t feel bad taking money from advertisers, and I’m not opposed to advertising. But I do think advertisers dramatically undervalue expensive, time-consuming projects like CGP Grey’s channel and also Crash Course (which is not financially sustainable through advertising). I also think advertisers undervalue YouTubers like shessomickey, who have hundreds of passionate and dedicated viewers but make at most a handful of dollars per video.

I’d pay $5 a month to support shessomickey, and there are probably a hundred people like me. That means that YouTube ads are undervaluing her relationship with her audience by a factor of around 100. Capitalism tells us, then, that we have a very inefficient market on our hands.

We’re not going to remove advertising from life or from YouTube. I don’t want to. I want to create an NPR Model for YouTube, one where people can CHOOSE to support the content creators they like and value without being threatened by a paywall. I think a lot of people will choose to support big projects like Crash Course, and I think a lot of people will choose to support individuals like Shessomickey, who may not have a gajillion subscribers but do make content that small but passionate audiences find important and valuable.

It’s kind of like being a Liverpool FC fan. I know I don’t HAVE to give the club money in order to be a fan. But I’m not just a fan: I’m a supporter. I buy home and away jerseys every year, partly so that I can wear them, but also partly because I know that money goes to club and helps pay the salaries of the players and the maintenance and training and grounds staff.

(p.s. I’ll be posting a series of “#wall of text” posts about boring video and publishing business stuff in advance of my leave [wife is expecting a baby soon]. This is the first one.)

That moment when one of the girls from your floor for the five seconds you went to NYU shows up on your Tumblr dash being mad smart.

adayinthelesbianlife:

It drives me nuts when I see queer kids screaming about fuck marriage and so on and so forth. It’s a privileged position. Marriage equality is Really, Really Important if you’re a poor LGBT person.

Supreme Court Oral Arguments about Prop 8 are now live.

I guess……

Many gay men live in poverty. Even more lesbians live in poverty. And about 65% of transgender individuals are reported to earning much lower wages than the average heterosexual. Marriage and domestic partnership benefits help lift LGBT people out of poverty: tax benefits, adding spouse to work benefits such as health insurance, pension plan, and more.

There are many pressing issues, such as youth homelessness, violence against queer people and so on, and it is a good thing to work on all of these issues concurrently rather than favour one thing over another, but today it is Marriage Equality’s day.

so why don’t we address the actual issues that are causing poverty, rather than trying to create some kind of false solution through marriage? what i’m saying is that society’s reliance on marriage to bring all people out of poverty does nothing but stymie some of the bleeding. its like trying to put a bandaid on a laceration that needs stitches.

Well, the main cause of poverty and violence against queers is lack of equality, lack of opportunity, being seen as second rate, defective, perverted. Legal exclusion, discrimination, has this effect on our families and our children-it gives the world ammunition to treat us different, to beat us up, to not employ us, to not give us permission to see our partner at the hospital, to ask us to leave the premises. Marriage may be considered a silly, outdated institution by some, but this is the world we live in, and putting unrealistic ideology before the urgent survival and happiness of human beings is problematic in my opinion.

i totally get being realistic, which is why i do support marriage equality, but at the same time, remain skeptical of the mainstream gay rights movement throwing nearly the entirety of its multimillion dollar budget behind marriage equality. for example, HRC spent nearly $5 million dollars on winning marriage equality in new york. $5 million dollars in one state, for one issue. imagine how many homeless queer and trans* kids that could house. if we’re going to talk about solving immediate crises and saving lives, then we need to start housing queer and trans* homeless youth, end employment discrimination, etc, etc. also i would argue the main cause of poverty among queer and trans* people is discrimination, not marriage inequality, hence the need for anti-discrimination legislation. we need a multifaceted approach for a diverse population.

I don’t disagree with you. These issues are so complex and multifaceted that no single measure could ever have a holistic effect and for every one positive measure there will be the population of a small country shouting “but what about…!”. I suppose I am fast forwarding a few years from now when average families across the country see a queer couple on the cover of a mainstream magazine, with some ridiculous caption over it like “Our wedding bliss! Exclusive photos!”, and rather than going “where the fuck has this world come to” they think “wow, they look great”. Marriage equality I believe will have a significant domino effect.

The community is going to have a big decision to make when marriage equality issues are suddenly no longer the big idea around which we all rally. If you care deeply about something, advocate for it. Whether you like marriage equality or not, it would be ridiculous to let all of the organizing and effort that went in to this movement just disappear after it ended.

NYC 2013: POLLS: Quinnipiac University

NYC 2013: POLLS: Quinnipiac University:
mayornyc2013:

I am probably the only one who particularly cares about the fact this is happening (the live-tweeting, not the election).

10/22/12: Marco Scutaro in the rain during Game 7 of the 2012 NLCS

Okay, I’m queuing this one so you’re all unprepared tomorrow.

So, Marco Scutaro. Venezolano. Signs as a free agent in 1994. First makes it to the Major Leagues in 2002. Spends so long as a “player to be named later”, the fodder of late-season trades and butt of a million jokes, that he makes into an actual documentary about the careers of players to be named later in 2005. Scutaro is so unknown that when he first meets his first major league manager, Bobby Valentine, it goes like this:

SCUTARO: Hey, I’m Marco Scutaro.
BOBBY VALENTINE: Oh, hey, kid! It’s nice to meet you. Sit down, sit down. So can I sign something for you? Do you live around here?
SCUTARO: …Marco Scutaro, your new infielder, sir.
BOBBY VALENTINE: …Oh.

Long, awkward pause.

Plays for the Mets; is pretty good. Plays for the A’s; is pretty good. Plays for the freaking Blue Jays; is on fire, but it’s the Blue Jays. Plays for the 2011 Red Sox, a team noted mostly for making the Houston Astros look like kings of good decisions. Resigns himself to the fact that he’s been playing baseball for SEVENTEEN YEARS and in the majors for ten and he’s just never going to be anything special. Because he’s an all-around amazing guy, never shows a single frown about this, never gives up. He’s 35. And to top off the indignities, is traded to the fucking Colorado Rockies.

Gets traded at the deadline to the Giants.

Instantly becomes the second baseman we’ve dreamt of for years. Helps us win the division. Helps us win the NLDS, in the sense of “help” that means “practically does it single-handed, although Buster Posey definitely helped as well.”

Game 2 of the NLCS. Matt Holliday, a Cardinals outfielder, slides into second base in the nastiest, most brutal way, and takes out Scutaro like he’s made out of tinfoil and toothpicks. Scutaro refuses to leave the game, and belts a single—straight to Holliday, who totally fucking misses it, allowing three runners to score. Then he is literally dragged out of the game by his manager, who has to actually pry him off the equipment to get him to leave before his hip falls in. The injury isn’t too bad. He’s still hurting. He refuses to play light. He refuses to even consider it. He’s going to keep playing.

He ends up with a .500 batting average for the postseason, which means that he got a hit every other at-bat, which is god damned near impossible. He also plays exquisite defense, including a catch at second base that was described as “the best possible play you could make at second base.” The Giants are down 3-1 (it’s a best of 7 series), but they refuse to be eliminated, forcing a Game 6 and then a Game 7.

And in Game 7, not only does Scutaro hit like a madman…

…the last out is Holliday hitting a pop-up straight to Scutaro’s sweet glove.

Now he’s the MVP of the NLCS, at 36 (his birthday was two days ago). He’s going to the World Series on Wednesday.

And that is why I love baseball.

and this post is why i love fandom, oh my god *blubbers*

And my father had an ulcer, and it exploded and you know all these toxins get in your blood. And basically, my father died, whatever, 50 days after his ulcer. So I had a father get sick while I was poor.

My mother got sick when I was rich. And my mother, you know… I don’t really want to get into it, but my mother was sicker than my father. And my mother’s alive. My mother’s fine, OK? I remember going to the hospital to see my mother and wondering, ‘Was I in the right place?’ Like, this was a hotel. Like it had a concierge, man.

People don’t… if the average person really knew the discrepancy in the health care system, there’d be riots in the streets, OK? They would burn this motherfucker down!”
”

-
Chris Rock [video]

Bringing this back, because some people don’t seem to understand that there is a discrepancy in the quality of care among poor, middle-class, and wealthy people, NO MATTER HOW DEBILITATING THEIR RESPECTIVE DISEASES MAY BE.
